Hello Everybody

I am Kalyan. I teach English language and literature in Indian College and Universities. My teaching and research interests include curriculum designing, multimedia mediated materials productions, elearning and eassessment.
I conduct teacher training workshops on the emerging areas of web 2.0 tools.

I am thankful to Margarita for registering me in this forum.
I would like to interact and share with you many a teaching pracrices and technological apllications.

Do you think it was easier to be a teacher 20 years ago than now? Would you enjoy working in a high-tech reality? Why? Have the chandes of electronic comminication always been for the better? Please, tell us. It's really interesting.

Teaching I believe is always challenging. It was and will be as you are to train the minds.Today I find the teacher needs to be a task enabler. She /he is also in the grip of the multi-tasking world. As a teacher one canot afford to say I dont need a computer or I shall not use computer. If one does that his predicament will be like that of Loman's in Arthur's Miller's Death of a Salesman . One has to adjust to times. Personally I believe a teacher can teach without any aids, even without a blackboard.Electronic communication has its advantages and we need to use them. See you and me exchanging views so easily through this forum couldnt be imagined 20 years back.

Yes, it's right! Now our students have a great chance to communicate with their foreign coevals, to take part in international projects.

Using IT in Teaching

I took 20 students of a class (undergraduate Ist year General course in English) with me to Victoria Memorial which was built by the British.
As we were there I asked them to write a message to their friend (not a member of this group) describing the memorial and save in the outbox of their mobile phone. I also asked them to store the response they get from friends. We finished visiting the memorial and decided to meet in the class the next day.

In the class I asked them to do two activities:

1.To write their message and response from the friend in a piece of paper first and then exchange with the next classmate, and after adding comments, pass it to the next person... In this way everyone saw the other's message and commented on it.

2.Then they were divided into four groups and were asked to prepare a draft paragraph on our visit to the memorial.

Then the group leader read out their draft twice and other group members noted as many key words possible.Each group was given 10 minutes to reconstruct their draft.

Finally four leaders sat together to shape the final draft.

Try this one and report to me how your students feel about this writing activity.

That's exactly what I think..., but the world today faces a serious challenge: we don't really understand the ways in which technology is chanding our lives: our education,our work, our communication, our relationships, everything. And if we don't understand today's world , how we make sure tomorrow's world is a good one for ourselves, our children, our children's children? What do you think about teachers response? What is more important: a good technology or a good teacher? Iam sure you know the answer.

As for your activities.... I think that's an effective way of the work in a group. Really. And
I find interesting your task to work with mobile phones: innovation in mobile phones has been happening so fast that it can be the first step to computer and the Internet access. And it is cheaper. So, we can use it. Thanks for the idea!
